Jonnie Jenson is the founder and also runs Live & Social a social media/business agency/ for SME’s and truly gets how to implement a social business strategy across a business.
Jonnie objectives for using social media personally, are that its about his raising his profile and building his reach, its about learning from people and sharing their stuff so that they might engage too, and also its about connecting to the people most important to him in his social life.
From a business perspective Jonnie finds most client don’t understand ‘Social’ so they help align a social business/engagement strategy with existing objectives to support the business. Jonnie doesn’t focus in on purely social campaigns, but on the wider impact of social as a long-term strategy.
In terms of social media routines Jonnie makes full use of tools and uses feedly as his current ‘curator of choice’ (what he means is that this is the tool he uses to help channel all social content into one place so he can read/scan all the content and take action from there) and carries out social activity at multiple times during the day, ideally in the morning.
For clients Jonnie encourages them to think of a routine for social like going to the gym, i.e. get the motivation to start and when you find success that will encourage you to do more. To get businesses to start , Jonnie and his team help them to decide what they are going to do online and show them how to do it, then the ‘doing’ becomes so much easier.
Jonnie also stresses a really key point which is to engage with the people who want to engage and who are active or in communities which are active. Because that is where you are going to have that initial success.
Jonnie, siting one of his award winning clients, says that success doesn’t come overnight, the brand must be willing to create content/a presence and have the resources in terms of a community manager or people (champions) who are really driving the social business agenda. But also key is to create a culture of sharing across the whole business as well to really begin to make a impact online.
Jonnie says the key to content creation/blogging is having a calendar. He quotes “the Sunday Times wasn’t written on Saturday afternoon”, he then explain his process of how he creates content.
Jonnies top tips for getting more social are: 1. What is your proposition? (by following us you will get this…) This provides a framework/process for everything else. 2. Content planning – in terms of what do people always ask us?, what do we want people to know about us?, what news/trends can we talk about?, who can blog for us who knows our market/topic?. 3. Community and conversation – find the key influencers and build relationships with them, acknowledge their content so that if they share your stuff you really amplify your reach.
